TWO SISTERS - MALMÖ STADSTEATER / ROYAL LYCEUM THEATRE EDINBURGH

The World Première of David Greig’s new play Two Sisters. Performed by a cast of 3 actors and a chorus of 12-15 young people.

What makes you feel alive? Where is the sixteen year old you used to be? Is she still inside you? What happened to her dreams? How is it possible to live your true life amidst the compromises of adulthood?

With humour and aching emotion, Amy and Emma stumble their way through a weekend where the past unexpectedly crashes through the veneer of adulthood and makes them confront their inner selves. A chorus of young people inhabit their world almost as ghosts their post selves, and also as a real unruly, wild presence.

The audience fill in a questionnaire before the performance, and their answers form part of the performance, creating a delicate web of real lives which stretches from the audience to the stage and back again, holding us all in a complex and powerful spell.

‘Addressing the audience directly, (the young company) ask us to recall our own 16-year-old selves; our enthusiasms, our crushes and our summer soundtracks… they incorporate our pre-show questionnaire responses into the script: no two performances are the same, though the memories of exuberance, vulnerability and hormones will surely be similar each night.

Rather than allowing himself to be overwhelmed by nostalgia, Greig is funny and wry. And in Wils Wilson’s sea-breeze of a production, the central characters are immaculately performed, showing themselves as forthright, muddled and horny as their teenage shadows.’ Guardian****

‘A welcome break in society’s heavy mythologizing of adolescence… Wils Wilson has created an evening perhaps as close to feel-good as performing arts can get. Much thanks to the truly high-class acting of Sandra Stojiljkovic, Dodona Imeri and Erik Olsson..’ Aftonbladet
